Nikon D80 and 4GB Secure Digital Cards

Posted by David Chin on December 18th, 2006 in Tips on operating your Nikon D80

A question was asked on whether it was possible to format a 4 GB SD memory card in the D80, and the answer was affirmative.

Another interesting point brought up is that an empty 4GB SD card has enough capacity to hold up to 220 RAW + JPEG images.

Another tip is to ensure that you purchase only 1 - 2GB SD cards or 4GB - 32GB (at the time of writing, the largest capacity is 8GB) SDHC cards (quickly scan available deals and prices of SDHC cards across multiple merchants) - avoid non-SDHC memory cards for capacities larger or equal to 4GB.

    Careful:

the 4GB card needs its own adapter.
Don’t think you can push it into any card reader and it will be read.
Even the newest HP laptops with built in reader cant read all the 4GB SDHC cards without the supplied adapter.

Microsoft says that vista can read all, havent tried that yet.

Yes the 4gb will load on Vista. I have a Toshiba A200 and can download all of the 4gb card very quickly in the front SD Port!

I bought a D80 over the weekend and was given an 8GB SDHC card (and reader) as a gift by the store with the purchase. However, I had been hesistant to use the 8GB SDHC card in the camera as there was no mention of its compatibility in the camera’s manual. Reading this post now, it appears that this card is alright to use :) . Thanks for information!
